Are You Future-Proofing Yourself?

Right on cue, there’s a new FO in town: FOBO – Fear of Becoming Obsolete. And that fear is real. The World Economic Forum predicts that by 2030, 44% of workers’ core skills will change. Some roles will disappear. Others will be reshaped. But here’s what often gets missed:

It’s not the tech that will make you obsolete.

It’s ignoring your uniquely human strengths.

Personally, I’m relieved. Because while AI accelerates, the skills in highest demand are deeply human – the very ones I’ve been helping leaders and teams develop for years. These aren’t ‘nice-to-haves’. They’re strategic. They’ve always powered sustainable high-performance, wellbeing and impact – and now they’re the difference between relevance and redundancy.

So while everyone races to learn the tech, the real opportunity is doubling down on what the tech can’t do.

Your Human Strengths are the Competitive Advantage

The World Economic Forum’s 2023 Future of Jobs Report was a wake-up call for anyone thinking AI would dominate the workforce entirely going forward. Yes, AI literacy and technological fluency are crucial but they’re not the whole story…

What the report told us is that the ‘most in-demand’ skills for the future include:

  • Creativity, Curiosity & Learning

  • Resilience

  • Empathy & Active Listening

  • Motivation & Self-awareness

  • Leadership & Talent Management.

These can’t be downloaded. They can’t be automated. They are emotional, relational, and intuitive – the very things that drive connection, unlock innovation, and help people navigate uncertainty.

And yet, these are often overlooked in development plans. Labeled ‘soft’ when they’re actually the hardest to replicate and the most critical to future-proofing.

In a world where AI handles more of the what, human strengths define the how and why, and that’s where real value lives.

So let’s be clear: AI literacy is no longer a differentiator, it’s the baseline.

But how you show up, connect, and lead? That’s your edge.

The Newest Power Skill

Emotional Intelligence (EI) – the ability to recognise, understand, and manage emotions – is now mission-critical.

Forbes named it the #1 leadership skill to develop in 2025, ahead of AI literacy. And a Fortune 500 study found that high-EI individuals generate twice the revenue of their average EI peers.

Why? Because as tech reshapes our tools, it’s EI that shapes the experience.

In fact, EI plays a crucial role in human-AI collaboration:

  • It promotes clear, effective communication with AI systems

  • Builds trust and engagement around how AI works

  • Fosters ethical use and empathetic design

  • And helps navigate fear, resistance and change around AI.

European Business Review.

And this isn’t just theory. It’s what makes the difference between AI as a tool, and AI as a strategic partner. And I’ll be exploring more on this topic at my next Masterclass.

Take the financial adviser who uses AI to scan markets and summarise client portfolios. But when a client loses a spouse, AI doesn’t write the condolence card. It’s the human touch (a phone call or meeting to reassure) informed by EI that builds trust, demonstrates care, and retains loyalty.

Future-Proofing means Human-Proofing

Knowing human strengths matter isn’t enough. We need to build them deliberately at every level.

For You:

  • What energises you? What drains you? What can AI take off your plate?

  • What is uniquely yours to do?

  • Use tools to benchmark your strengths and areas to grow (ask me which ones!).

For Organisations:

  • Build the foundations with AI literacy

  • Evolve your L&D strategy to develop the human capabilities that matter most

  • Measure where your team is now, and where they need to be next.

We will all struggle to thrive in the future if we’re not prioritising what matters most!

Better machines demand better humans.

In a world being transformed by technology, the smartest thing we can do is focus on what we can control – the strengths that no machine can replicate.

So, how are you preparing for the future?
